My Idea Is:
As a new, high-energy, and young Jewish communal house in Berkeley, California called 'The Matriarchy', we are beginning a monthly Kabbalat Shabbat minyan. Services are traditional, egalitarian, dance-friendly, and open to the community, followed by a vegetarian kosher potluck dinner.
I'll Use My Grant To:
We are seeking a microgrant of $1,000 to fund siddurim, benchers, chairs, shabbat candles, kosher wine for kiddush, and potluck supplies (reusable serving utensils, plates, cutlery, cups, etc.).
My Intended Audience:
We recently hosted our first Friday night gathering, which brought in more than 50 people! Word spread like wildfire through Facebook.
I'll Share The Experience With Others By:
As the event takes place on Shabbat, we are unable to take photos of the event. However, as our house hosts many events during the week, and has an artist-in-residence, we are prepared to come up with creative methods of capturing the wonder of events at the Matriarchy.
Our house is a joint project of five young 20-something Jews who are new to the Bay area and crave community. We have 3 Rebecca's (hence, our house name!), plus a Raphael and an Arielle. Collectively, we have lived across the US and Israel, participated in a range of Jewish programs including the Bronfman and Dorot Fellowships, Yeshivat Hadar, and Leading Up North. Some of us are pursuing graduate degrees at the University of California at Berkeley, and some of us are working in artsy, social justice jobs.
